CHRISTCHURCH.
December 5. A tender for the new public hall for theatrical and other purposes was accepted on Saturday. The amount is £8000. The heaviest shock of earthquake experienced since 1868 occurred shortly after 8 o'clock this morning. The vibration continued about 45 seconds. Tbe direction was N.E. to S.W. No serious damage is reported, but a small piece of ornamental stone moulding was displaced from the summit of the Cathedral spire, aud fell on to the asphalt pavement, making a deep indentation.
