A correspondent wires : —I have just been talking to Hunter, of Otakehu, upon whose land the Maoris were ploughing. He tells me that many of tbe settlers blame him for not deciding to turn the Maoris off, but as the Defence Minister threw the responsibility on him of deciding which course was to be adopted he thinks, under the circumstances, he did what was best. Some other settlers on the Plains have made private arrangements and exchanges with the natives, and both racesappear to be quite satisfied. The rumors lately prevailing are now subsiding.
