In the House of Commons to-day the Irish Land Bill was further considered in committee. It was urged by the opponents of the measure that action should be taken by the Government in regard to absenteeism, and the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone eventually announced that proper steps would be taken to deal with the question of the residence of landlords in Ireland.

Mr Gladstone has addressed a letter to the press, in which he denies that the Viceroy of Ireland has suggested to the Government the advisability of taking steps for the suppression of the Irish Land League.

Serious disturbances continue to occur in Ireland. At Clare to-day a body of Irish peasants, armed with Snider rifles, offered violent resistance to the service of certain writs. Shots were exchanged with the troopers who were present to support the process servers, and one man was killed and many others seriously wounded. June 4. In the House of Commons last night stormy scenes occurred during the consideration of the Irish Land Bill in committee, owing to the obstructive tactics of the Irish members. Mr J. O'Kelly, member for Roscommon, was most disorderly, and was finally by the Speaker's order suspended for the rest of tbe sitting. Both Houses of Parliament now stand adjourned for the Whitsun recess. Owing to the continuance of disturbances in Ireland further reinforcements of troops have been ordered across the channel to augment the forces iv the disaffected districts. The police in Ireland are now actively engaged in searching for arms iv the houses of suspected persons in accordance with the powers conferred by the Irish Arms Act.
