LONDON.
May 27. A national memorial to the late Lord Beaeonefield, to take the form of a statue placed in some part of London, has been projected, and a committee has been formed for the purpose of carrying out the object. Viewing the number of dukes, marquises, earls, and noblemen generally whose names appear on the committee, it is without parallel.
The directors of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company have declared a dividend of five per cent.
May 28. The Home Rule party in the House of Commons are developing obstructive tactics with the object of defeating the Irish Land Bill.
The state of Ireland is growing worse. Several incendiary fires have taken place in Cork, and conflicts have occurred in various places between the peasants and military. At Leitrim the rioters were so numerous and determined that a force of 600 soldiers was unable to protect the sheriffs in the discharge of their duty.
Professor Robertson Smith, Professor of Oriental Languages at the Free Church College, Aberdeen, has been expelled for heresy.
