CITY WEST ELECTION.
To the Editor : Sir, — Society in the conglomerate is a fuuny animal. Auckland society is a very funny animal indeed. We have for Mayor a gentleman whose equal (without the faintest disiespect to his predecessor) for clear-headedness and devotiouto Ins duties has not heietofore filled the ci\ 10 chair. Well, a lot of Anckland wiseacres with a full knowledge of that fact, busied themselves to depuve the city of that gentleman's valuable- services, aud pack him off to Wellington Foitunately Mr. Touks' good sense and moial uomage was all sulh cient to resist the toinpting olfer, and the city will therefoie not bedi-pnved tm seveial mouths of its chief magistrate Hut if Mi Tonks is valuable as a Mayor, Mr Da\id (Joldie is equally eveollent as a uty councillor. I dare to say that no foimer or piesentO.C. has shown nunc le.vl aptitude for business, nine determination m guaidmg the citizens' best inteie-.t-<, lombiucd with gentlemanly depoituient that compels lLspect than Mr. David Goldie, a tine people's champion, free from the objectionable features with winch that character has been heretofore suirounded. Well, the addlepatcs won't leave him alone wlieie he is doing so much g'>od, but must needs Btait him through (Jity West to the Empiic City. Now, I am certain I am not singular in my belief that the province will not bo so much a gainer by his representing City West in the General Assembly as the city will be a loser through his absence from the Council Board. If that gentleman decides to stand for City West, which, like the Mayor, I hope he won't, I will rote against him, and strain every peg
