FOOTBALL MATCH.
A vr.ro exciting contest took place on Saturday afternoon on the Domain cricket ground, betw een the officers of the squadron now in haibour and an Auckland team, consisting of eight from the Noith Shore and eight fioni the Auckland Club. The game was to have commented at 3 p.m., but it was halfpast before tlu ball was staited. Time was tailed at .I .% p m , when the game was. decJaiod diawn Auckland, liowo\ or, had, if anything. th( best ot it. Nolan seemed a, touch, but no goal was secuicd from it. The first half hour's play was fa&l and men 1 ; but as the game woie on theio wcie csidctib signs of "bellows to mend.' 1 Thib is invanably the case at an opening game, and we suspect many felt a slight sensation of stitfne&s yesterday morning. Both teams worked their best, and played to wm ; but a great deal was required to enable either team to scoie a \utoiy. Seveial good inns were mado on each side. The umpues weie all that could be desned, and their decisions weic imaiiably acted upon. The ground Mas pretty good, and a larger area was obtained than usual. It is only lair, peihaps, to say that owing to unforeseen events, the " Xavy " had to be reinfoiced by >»oim' local players. When time Avas called, it was getting daik, and no tune was lo-,t in making for home, but not until eheeis had been given and leturned feu all concerned ft our visitois were at. w ell pleased with the game and its conclusion as our local men, we shall hope to see another match on borne futuie diy. Cousideiing the distance fiom town, a \cry fair numWr of onlookeis were present, who seemed to enjoy the " spills " a tnfle more than they might have done had they been principals in the matter.
