THE HONEY-BEER CASE.
To the Editor : Sir,— Th« very heavy fine impoiod on J. B. Matthews, Kaitaia, Mangonui, for selling honey-bear is still the topic of conversation. The beer seized has been gold, and fetched 30s. We read of penalties of £6 and £10 for selling spirits, but a fin* and expenses amounting to nearly £40, for selling noney -beer, is out-heroding Herod for a tirst offence. What makes it worse in country districts is, there is no lawyer, and virtually no appeal. Mangonui has been long ago proverbial for arbitrary measures. When we get a pamphlet from a settler of many yean' experience, showing the abuses of the district which, I hoar, is being published, it will rather startle the people. Nothing more beneficial to country districts oould be devised by the ensuing Assembly than an alteration of the present system. — I am, Jfcc., A OOMUMPONDIKT.
