REPORT OF SCHOLARSHIPS' COMMITTEE.

Youk committee have the honour to re port as follows : — At the examination held last month nine candidates competed for the open scholarships. The common schools sont up 40 boys ; of these 14 only were candidates for scholarships, the remainder having attended in compliance with the resolution of the Board requiring every school in the city, and within it certain distance of it, to send up five pupils under certain conditions. Several of the latter, though they failed to obtain a large number of marks, showed reasonable proficiency in the subjects most essential to be taught in common schools. Twelve girls came up for certificates of proficiency, and six iu compliance with the resolution above referred to. Your committee, in accordance with the powers given them, havo made the following awards of scholarships and certificates of proficiaucy : — One open scholarship to R. H. Reid ; one open scholarship, vacant by the resignation of T. Mackay (one year to run), to St. 0. T. Tisdall. Three scholarships— confined to pupils of common schools — one eaoh to C. Burgess, W. A. Carrutb, and A. Forrest. Certificates of proficiency to the following candidates for open scholarships : — A. Nicholson, J. Haultain, G. H. King, G. K. Seabrook, and J. K. Davis. Certificates of proficiency to the following candidates from common schools : J. Adams, 0. Ehodes, R. Skeen, and Aitkeii. Certificates of proficiency to the following girls : Misses C. J. Robertson, F. M. George, L. Monro, H. Davy, N. Fenton, E. Burton, A. Warner. Tables are appended showing the number of marks obtained by each candidate, and giving further particulars. G. M. The uara°s of those only who obtained over 100 marks are given. Half the number 555 marks at least must be obtained to entitle a candidate to a scholarship.
