CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was hi Id yesterday afternoon, at their Chambers, Queenstreeb. Present : Hn Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Macrcady, Hurst, Isaacs, Prime, and Jones. — The minutes of lost meeting were read and confirmed. CftRRK.TONDENCE. — The following letters were read :-Frora his Honor the Superintendent stating, m reference to the Mount Eden Koynlty, that the Government could not inteifeio until the- Piovincial Council had dealt with tho matter. — Fiom the Piovincial Secretary, stating that the proposal of the Council to horrow £25,000 was under consideration. — From tho game in reference to leakage of water plugs, and stating that additional fire plugs cr-uld uot bo granted unless the expense was paid. — From W. C. Daldy, asking that a portion of Bercsford-street bo | cut down to afford access to the new church being built there, at a cost «>f £1000. This was itferred to the City Surveyor for his report. — Other letters of niiuor import were also dealt with. Petitions — A.n additional petition was received from the labouring men, requesting "the Lord Mayor and Council" to inert aso thrir pay by a shilling a day, giving aa a reason for the application that the Harbour Board and tho Dedwood Hig\w.iy Board gave six and sixpenco a day, and tho Council only five and sixpence. —The Mayor explained that the city men were paid all through both wcl and dry weather, and al<-o received overtime. — On the motion of Councillor Macrcady, seconded by Councillor H'irst, tho Town Clerk was ordered to inform the men that the Council was uot a*; piesent in a position to comply with their uquert. The Building Act. —The consideration of tho extension of the Budding Act was oidered to stand over till next meeting. Cab Fakes.— Cor -Watum of these was also ordered to stand over for the present, as also the granting of licenses to cabs and ommhusscs to stand at railway stations. Hkiir strei-t Level — Consideration of thi3 question was postponed a no die.
