DEMONSTRATION COMMITTEE MEETING.

A meeting of the Demonstration Committee was held yesterday afternoon at the City Council Chambers (his Worship th« Mayor in the chair), to make final arrange* ments for the demonstration to take place on the occasion of the Governor's departure from the colony. — The Chairman stated that he had communicated with the GoTernment as to contributing towards the expense. Thig was roughly estimated at £100 or £150. The 1 folio win it letter had been received from the .Superintendent :— " Superintendent's Office, Aucklaud, March 7, 1873. Sir, — I havo the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 25th ult., applying for a contribution out of the public funds of the province towards defraying the expense of the demonstration to be made upon the departure of his Excellency the Governor and family from this colony, and to request that you will be good enough to inform me what expenditure the committee propose to incur, as the Provincial Government are not aware that any considerable expense need be incurred. — I have, &c, Thomas B. Gillie*, Superintendent. T. Weston.Esq., Secretary Demonstration Committee." — Messrs. Macffarlane and Weston were appointed to collect subscriptions from the citizens generally. — The Chairman said he had mentioned to the Governor the fact that it was contemplated to hare a demonstration on the occasion of his Excellency's going away. His Excellency had said he felt very proud of the honour intended to be conferred, and that he was entirely in the hands of the committee. His Excellency had, however, suggested that the procession might be shortened from what was originally intended. — Major Tisdall stated that all the Auckland Volunteer troops, with Otahuhu, Howick, &c, had signified their intention of taking part in tbe demonstration Two Volunteer bands would also be available. There would also be a strong muster of public bodies, Odd Fellows, Foresters, Uechabites, Templars, Orangemen, &c. — The Chairman said two carriages and four hones each would havo to be piovided for bis Excellency and suite. — It was decided that another carriage should be provided for the use of the Mayor, Secretary, and Town Clerk. — Messrs. Cole, Gault, Talbot, and Wilkes were appointed a sub-committee, with authority to incur the necessary expenses for a band. The order of protesaion was suggested to be as follows, but not definitely decided upon: — Ca\alry, Auckland Fire Brigade, Band, Friendly Societies, Mayor, Cavalry, his Excellency and Suito, Ministers, Superintendent and Executive, Judges, Native Chiefs, Consuls, &c, Cavalry, Volunteers, Band, Citizens, &c. — Mr. Macffarlano said his Excellency desired that there should not bo more than two addresses. — It was agreed that an addieas from the City Council and profiuco would bo sufficient. In the matter of decorations it was stated that the Harbour Board would see to the Wharf decoratious, and that the citizens along the line of loute bo requested to co-operate by lining the streets with flags so far aa practicable. — Mr. Ellis said the Yacht Club bad decided to take part in the demonstration. Their services were accepted by the committee. Iu the event of there not being suffic ent wind for the yachts to sail, they would anchor aud hue the route to the Heads. The meeting then adjourned until Saturday, at 7 p.m.
