IMPORTANT NATIVE INTELLIGENCE.—GOLD DISCO VRRY.
Our Aoteacorrespouclent writes :—"TeKooi.'i has only bis two wives with him, and is peaceably disposed. Gold has been discovered by the natives at Tongaporutu, and the native owners (Taranakis) applied to the King for permission to open the field. This was refused, so the Tpranakis intend to open it on their own responsibility. I have not heard the cause assigned, but I have every reason to believe that there is truth in a report that the Ngatimaniapotos have severed themselves from the King. Mr. James Mackay has been canvassing the natives of this locality by letter, and I believe a large number have expressed their ■willingness that he should take charge of native affairs. Of course natives perfectly understand how to make frienda of the mammon of unrighteousness, and when they see, or think they see, how the cat is going to jump, they make preparations for a leap in the same direction. The natives don't like Mr. Mackay. They say he is a • rupahu (a bounce). At the same time you could not find a better man for a magistrate in a native district if you searched the island through."
