Hokitika, Friday. The ' Tararua arrived at 10 o'clock last night. Her cargo for Hokitika consists of 100 tons. She brings 12 passengers.
MELBOURNE. October 5. The debate on the Education Bill is still proceeding, and it is likely to be carried by majority in the Assembly. The Council rejected the Permissive Bill and the Labour Bill, and struck out the main principles in the Mining on Private Properties Bill. The attention of the Government was called to the rejection of these measures, and they acknowledged the responsibility in the matber, and promised to adopt other measures. Miners are returning from Charters Towers in great numbers. Tenders have been accepted for the formation of 34 miles of railways : From Newstead to Maryborough, and Barrumbert to Beaufort. The rate of the former is £2,700 per mile, and the latter £2,1G4 per mile. Messrs. Alexander and James Goran, tallow-manufacturers, have been committed on a charge of conspiracy to defraud. The Australian Alliance Company's dividend was 10 per cent., with £32,000 reserved. EacehorseB are arriving from Sydney. De Haga, formerly of L) ster's Opera Company, blew his brains out yesterday. The convict Weechurch, recently respited, attempted suicide, by opening a vein in his arm. A Ballarat firm has accepted a tender to construct 50 locomotives at a cost of over £50,000. Sales have been mado of over 12,000 bushels New Zealand wheat up to 6s. l^d. per bushel — mostly for shipment. Oats are dull, and only a moderate business is doing in. the import market. Arrived: 3Cth, 'Albion' and ' Wonga Wonga. ' The revenue returns show a net increase of £212,464 on the year. Bank stocks are iv demand for investment. The ' Alhambra ' leaves for the Bluff on the 12th instant.
SYDNEY. October 5. The steamer ' Queensland ' encountered a heavy sea off Solitaires, and lost her chief officer. 1 The vessel was damaged. j The Rev. ADELAIDE. Octoter 5. Scott's section, Mount Pleasant, has formed a company with 20,000 shares, wh eh were all ta^en up in two hours. The Consolidation Loan Bill was read a second time. The Adelaide Cup, 200sova., sweepstakes, with 15 added, will take place in May. Bishop Quinn, of Bathurst, is likely to iill the vacant bishopric. Breads tuffs very dull. Wheat, sa. Gd.
