MATAKANA.-HIGHWAY MATTERS.
To the Editor : Sir, —ln explanation of the reasons which must have induced some of the residents oE this district to wait upon the Deputy-Superintendent, permit we to gay that the eastern or that part of the Matakana district which is craving for separation have had a considerable majority at every road meeting since the formation of the' district, and consequently the appointment of tru&teea has been in their own hands; they have always had a majority of trustees, with the exception of last yoar, andtho reason why last year was an exception was that none of them would accept the office. At the present time, four out of the fire trustees belong to the eastern part of the district, and voted for separation. , At the annual meeting we left the rate for the trustees to tit, so they have the .power to fix such a rate as their necessities require, and lay it out as they think proper. In the western part of the district, we have done hundreds of pounds' worth of work-on the roads, independent of the Road-Board. The wholeof the'roap*^ were felled .before the Road Board w"»8^ established, and since then the whole settle--' ment, old and young, tnrned out and fpent three days in logging up and partly stumping the roads; and we have cut miles of roadside jlitcb, and are cutting more every year. In the eastern part the settlers have done absolutely nothing : the Board have felled, cleared, bridged, and partly ditched their roada, so you w;ill sea their plea fou.aeparation is a sham and a humbug. If they wish to go into the financial part of the question, I shall be happy to oblige them,— l am, &c, M.V.J., Matakana.
