Departures. Duke of Edinburgh, for Whangarei.

The a.s. Wellington was to leave Wellington for the Manukau on Sunday last, and the s.B. Phrebe on the 4th instant. The p. a. Clyde, hence, arrived at Lyttelton on the 25th ultimo. » The s.B. Gothenburg arrived afc Wellington on the 26th ultimo. She toned the s.s. Ahuriri from Cape Campbell to Wellington, the latter vessel having run short of fuel. H.M.s. Basilisk (sister vessel to , the Virago), 6 guns, Captain John Moresby, arrived in haroour yesterday from Wellington. She left on the 27th ultimo, and experienced variable winds throughout tho passage. The Basilisk ia expected to remain here for about two months. ' The schooner Tauranga loffc Tauranga on Monday last, f and. arrived in harbour yesterday. She brings several passengers and a cargo of 76 bales hay. The outter Hero loft Tauranga for the Thames on Friday last. Beck Loads on Steamers.— ln the House of Representatives on September 20, Mr. E. Richardson aaked the Colonial Secretary "whether the attention of the Government had been called to the practice which at present obtains of large deck loads on steamers on the coast of New Zealand, to the serious danger of the lives of passengers; and, if so, whether they intended taking any steps for the prevention of tho same. The moTer said that during the last year several accidents of a serious nature had accurred, and he would mention particularly one case, in which it mas miraculous that the steamer did not go down bodily, in consequence of the amount of cargo she had on board j hor hold being full of dead weight, and her decks orowded with cargo. Mr. Vogel said i that the attention of the Government had been called to tho steamer Maori by the Inspector, at Lyttelton, and instructions had been sent to Port Chalmers to prevent vessels loaviug that port with deck loads. Tho Government were of opinion that the matter was a very important one, and steps would bo taken to enforce)! the regulations, whioh were supposed to be sufficiently rigid to prevent the occurrence of similar irregularities. With reference to tho regulations themselyea, inquiry would be made which, if they were uot sufficient to meet cases likely to arise, the Government would take steps to have them remodelled.
