THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL: MEETING AT FIJI.

A meeting of the merchants and others interested in the mail service running the Nunuku Passage was held on February 28, in the Read ing-room, Dr. Brower, Aineiican Consul, in the chair. The meeting appeared unanimous in advocating that passage, and several who had sailed through it spoke of it as being^remarkably safe. —Captain Cox told the meeting that, if he was asked about it, he should say they could not have a better and safer passage ; and Captain Moore, of the s.s. 'James Paterson,' asserted that the statement of such a man as Captain Cox with reference to this passage would have very great weight with the Board of Directors of the A.3.N. Company, and, on his arrival in Sydney, he should lay it before them.— The following resolutions, after some conversational discussion, were passed unanimously : — Mr. Burfc proposed, and Mr. Smith seconded, " That this meeting is of opinion that, when it has been decided for mail Bteamcrs to call at Fiji, and the immediate route fixed, the inhabitants of the Group guarantee £1,000, or such proportion as would be requited as a fair contribution towards the necessary surveys, and lights for ingress and egress to and from the Group, it being understood that the harbour of Levuka will be lighted shortly without reference to this restriction." — On the motion of Mr. J. C. Smith, seconded by Mr. S. C. Burtt, it was resolved, " That, in furtherance of the first resolution, a committee of five gentlemen be appointed to carry out the objects of this meeting before the departure of the ' James Paterson j committee to consist of Messrs. Hennings, S. C. Burt, J. Morey, J. Towson, and the mover."— Mr. Morey ebjected to his name being on the committee, and desired the Chairman to withdraw it. — Mr. Turner moved, and Mr. Levy seconded, ' 'That this meeting authorises Captain Moore to procure two lights for the harbour of Levuka, at a cost of, say, £30. The same to be paid on arrival by public subscripion.'' — Fiji Times, March 1.
