ST. PAUL'S SUNDAY-SCHOOL.

The annual social gathering in connection with St. Paul's Sunday-school -toot pla.ee in. the Music Hall, Symonds-street, laat evening. Tea was commenced at half-pa9t six o'clock, the following ladies officiating at tho taMes : —Mrs. Whitaker, Miss Coafcea, Mrs. Pratt, Mrs. Payne, Mrs. Lewis, Mr 3. Porter, Mrs. Dyson, Mrs Hughes, Mrs. Fenton, Miss Lysnar, Miss Flower, Mrs. Brett, Mrs. Tassell, and Mrs. Watling. In addition to the ladies mentioned, several members of the congregation c 'Dtributed to the furnishing of the tables. We have been requested to convey the thanks due to Mr. J Copland, who kindly supplied the necessary crockery ware and the tables. The ladies were kept fully employed in attending upon their guests until a out eight o'clock, when the Rev. O. M, Nelson opened the i usiness of the evening by calling upon Mr. Hammond, superintendent of the Sun-day-school, to read the annual report. Mr. Hammond introduced the report with a few remarks upon the progress of the school, and exprpssed a regret, which he v» as sure they all felt, that evening, at the absence of the Rev. Archdeacon Lloyd, who had for years taken an active part in those anuual schoolgatherings. From the report, we gather that the number of children on the roll at present is 154, and the average attendance during the past year has been 100. The number of teachers is large, and their attendance has been regular. During the year, the library was increased by £10 worth of books from England, which have proved a most acceptable addition. The scholars, u der the guidance of their teachers, are endeavouring to raise enough money to support and educate an Island boy.in connection with the Melanesian Mission, but their weekly contributions during the year were not quite sufficient for the purpose. A hope was expressed, however, that they may yet contribute annually enough money for that object. The total receipta for the year amounted to £59 la. 5d., and the expenditure to £42 ss. 9d., leaving a balance of £16 15s. Bd. The sum received on account of the Melanesiau fund was £6 7s. 3d. In addition to the purpose for which the soiree was specially designed, the evening was marked by another most interesting event, in the presentation of the address to Mr. Lewis, churchwarden of St. Paul's Church, upon the occasion of his resigning, on account of ill health, an office which he had held for nine years to the satisfaction of all the parishioners. The address was beautifully illuminated and framed, and could not but prove a most acceptable acknowledgment of Mr. Lewis's many valuable services to the parish. Altogether the evening waa spent in a most agreeable manner, a well-arranged musical programme being gone through, chiefly by members nf St. Paul's choir. The pieces rendered comprised : "Tramp, tramp," chvTU,s, by the choir ; sonjj, Mr. Newbury ; triplet, Mis. J. W. Flower, Mugs Coatee, and. Mr. Brefcfc ; glee, choir ; reading, Rev. C. M. Nelson : song, '" England, "composed by Mr. Lmngstone, and sung by Mr. Newbury; comic song, " Grecian Bend," Mr. H. Hampton ; song, Madame Mohler ; duet, "Gipsy Countess," Mks Coates and Mr. Brett; glee, " Mynheer Van Dunck," Mrs. Williamson, Mr Skinner, and Mr. Brett; and other quintettes by the choir. Mr. Livingstoue presided at the piauo, and was assisted m the instrumental department of the entertainment by some gentlemen, members of the Choral Society.

Bamford, the common hangman of Melbourne, was recently sent to gaol ior six mouths. 1 Amongst the simplest methods for carrying ice, and keeping it for some time, we may mention the following :— Get two cans, one suffi aently smaller than the other to leave a space of about an inch between them, when the esmaller one is placed inside the other, lino the interstice with felt.
