LATEST THAMES NEWS. [FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] MINING. Thursday.

California^ Company. — The annual meeting of this rising company was held yesternoon at the company's office, Grahamstown, Mr. Owen in the chair. The balance-sheet, audited by Mr. Waymouth, was adopted, and also the directors' report, which succinctly > exiJ>2Hirc& *&*%> I *. and. epitomised its career. Ifc showed that, during the first twelvemonths subsequent to its opening, the mine was in a languishing condition, mainly on account of the almost impossibility of getting in calls to work it, and it was not until it fell into the hands of Messrs. llawlings and Smallman, the first tt ibuters, that there was the slightest foreshadowing of the brilliant career now apparently in store for it. The first tributers held it six months, and obtained on an average half an ounce of gold to every ton crushed. The terms of agreement having been broken by the first tributers, the tribute was cancelled by the directors, and a becond one let to Messrs. Senior and Smallman. Under tkeir management the development of the mine proceeded rapidly, aa may be inferred from the fact that up to date they had broken out and crushed 2,500 tons of stone, which yielded 8270z sdwt. llyr. of melted gold, the rate per ton being 6dwt. 12gr. In October last, the company expended £200 in the purchase of the Brother Jonathan Claim, and obtained thereby not only a piece of gr und of intrinsic value, but that great desideratum, fall, as well. The Brother Jonathan commands levels over 120tt. in height on the lode. The mine is now in the hands of a third pprty of tributers. Messrs. Smallman and Senior having sold three-fourths of the tribute to Messrs. Darrow and Cameron, for the sum of £.">OO. A tan extra general meeting, held immediately the &bove had been finished with, the following shareholders were elected directors for the ensuing year : -Messrs. Wells, Comer, Owen, I Wright, and Elworth. A formal application ! on the part «f the tributers for an extension of time in the terms of the tribute was \ favourably received, bat not replied to. All Nations: Rich Find. —Yesterday and to-day tinds of extraordinarily rich, specimens have been made in this mine, and, •vrhat is more, in an old leadfei* (sujjpofe^d tft be a pavfc of the Inverness vein), within a couple of feet or so of some oid stopes that were in work. The truth of the above is borne out by the magnificent result ,of the partial cleaning-up, which took place to-day for the company at the Kuranui machine. 7570z. lOdwt. of retorted gold were obtained, which amount is expected to be supplemented on Saturday by GOOoz. or 700oz. more, when the monthly cleaning up is to be completed. During last night and to-day a quantity, estimated at 2001b. weight of first-class stone, was taken out of the vein, and, together with accumulations meantime, will bo crushed on Friday. I therefore consider that the estimated return of Satuiday is anything but in excess of what it is likely to be. Dexon'x No. 1 cleaned up and retorted at Goodwill's yesterday evening, to a very fair result of 83oz. of gold from the 60 tons of stone crushed. Red Queen. — The half -yearly meeting- of this company was held this afternoon at the company's office, Grahamstovvn. The statement of accounts for the half-year was examined and passed, aud then the following directoi 9 were elected :— Messrs. Williamson, Wood, Humphries, Iwerson, aud Warmoll. Mr. Philp was re-olectcd legal manager ; and Mr. P. Woodward, auditor. At a directors' meeting held afterwards, a call of Is. the specific share was made, credit to be given for previous call payments. Cock-a-Doodle-Doo Encroachment Case. — This case is in everybody's mouth up here, and various are the rumours afloat concerning it. I think, however, the telegram relating to it that you published in yesterday's paper is substantially correct, only fc&ab instead oi £2,WM> the damages are laid at half that sum. It ia not yet known when the case will be heard in the Warden's Court.
