ATTEMPTED ESCAPE FROM MOUNT EDEN STOCKADE.
Thrke prisoners at the Stockade made a desperate attempt early yesterday morning to escape from confinement. It appears that, before daylight, Warder Martin went to the meas-room, and on unlocking the door he was rushed by three prisoners, the ringleader being one called Dunn, who has ere now attained some notoriety by his thefts. Luckily the warder was on his guard ; and what with hitting one with the keys, another with the lamp he carried, and finally snaking off&Dtaai wsfe oi Ins xcvoViex, tilva prisoners scampered back by tih.e way tihey camo bo their ce)h. The shot fived irom the revolver entered the wall ; but there is little doubt that, if the rogues had not believed discretion to be "the better part of valour," one or all of them might have retired the worse for their encounter. It seemed as if the daring trio had waited their opportunity in the mess-room all the night, having gained access thereto from their cells. Too much cannot; be said of the presence of mind and pluck of the warder engaged in this unexpected affray ; and the moral effect it will have on the prisoners generally will be of immense benefit to the godd order of tho " esfcabliahmenfci"
