THE ALARM AT ALEXANDRA.

Ode. Alexandra correspondent writes :—"My auticipation of spending a pleasant evening at ou>* ball lmvo boon completely upsfit by the arrival of a messenger from Turner's, WluU information that a large party of Hauhaus, well armed, weie within a short distance of their residence, and meant to attack the settlement. It appears that a native named Mapi, residing near Kopua, on his return from Kawhia on a visit, passed the party on the road, and Tapihana, the leader, told him they intended to * light a fire' at this place. On receipt of this intelligence the alarm *as at once sounded, and, so many out-settlers being in for the ball and mail, the redoubt round the church was quickly occupied by them. Orderlies were sent round to warn the out-settlers, who are now with their wives and families in the church. Colonel Lyon and Inspector Kenny arrived at half-past eleven at night, and a detachment of 15 men are on their way from Hamilton. No farther news received." . Writing on the 4th, our correspondent ' says :—""All were on the alert till daylight this morning, but nothing was seen or heard from the enemy. I hardly think them j d iring enough to attack the settlement. I expect they are prowling about hoping to cut off some of the outsettlers. The detachment; from Hamilton have arrived. There are only about 60 men with some women. They are building apa about six or seven miles from here. Some of their number went on to the Kuiti." Our Hamilton correspondent writes :—: — " Colonel Lyou and the whole of the Armed Constabulary stationed here have left for Alexandra."
