ONEHUNGA RAILWAY . — BLUFF EXTENSION.
A FEW of the principal residents, particularly mtere-ted in the trade and shipping of Onehunga, met on Thursday evening for the purpose of considering what steps it would be most advisable to take to counteract a resolution of the Provincial Council recommending the extension of the railway to the Bluff. The scheme itself was most heartily condemned for the reasons that it would ruin the whole town of Onehunga by establishing another town at the Bluff ; that there is already ample accommodation at the Government Wharf for all the shipping at present frequenting the port, and many more ; so that the proposed expenditure, while entirely uncalled for on any public grounds, would be most detrimental to the interests of the established town of Onehunga. It was ultimately agreed to draw up a petition to his Excellency the Governor in Council, praying him not to accede to the recommendation of the Provincial Council. Considerable dissatisfaction was expressed at the conduct of the two representatives of the town in not consulting their constituents on a question so vitally affecting their interests. At the same time it was agreed to petition the Provincial Council in favour of a liridge across to Mangere, which, would not only be a great benefit to Onehunga, but would clear out the channel, and bring a lar^e extent of the finest Jan 4 >n the province much, nearer to Auckland. — [Own Correspondent.]
