LATER. AUSTRALIAN TELEGRAMS
Melbourne, November 23 : The Assembly has decided to change the financial year ; to make it end on the 30fcb June, 1871. Estimates up to that period have been tabled. The financial statement anticipates a deficit then of £50,000, bnt that includes expenses connected with the census, and with the general election, which properly belong to the whole year. The dedcit at the end of the year will not be much. The House decided to issue a writ for Bailhe s seat, Baillie having sent a letter of resignation from Fiji to Mr. Everard, who had mislaid it. — The Gazette fixes the 2nd April as the day for taking the census.— Cotherel, the polytechnist, from Npw Zealand, opened at the Polytechnic, with every prospect of success. The Press apeaks well of him.— The mail steamer 'Geelong' ar rived in the Bay this morning. The telegrams reached us from Adelaide on Monday. — Captain Gilxnore has arrived from Galle.
