CITY BOARD.

Tjih fortnightly meeting of the City Board was held yesterday afternoon, at 2 o'clock. Pie&ent- The Chairman (Jlr. P. A. Philips): and AJca^is. A. Ashei", Atkin, JBugden, George, Hampton, Macready, Sceats, and Staines. — The Secretary read the minutes of previous meeting, which were confirmed. Lamps. — Mr. (ieorge asked the Chairman if the Lighting Committee has power to extinguish lamps or light others whish may be erected. — Some discussion followed — Mr. George put a definite motion to the Board, namely, that the lamp in front of Mr. Evitt's shop, Upper Queen-street, be extinguished, as in its present position it is a useless and unnecessary expense. — Mr. Sceats seconded. — Mr. iStaines asked for an explanation of what was meant by this motion. He supposed it meant the removal of the lamp altogether. It wa3 well known that it was a most dangerous street, even if there had been a footpath. — After a fGW other lemarks, not very complimentary, the motion was put and carried.

Foreman's Report. — A report was read from the former Foreman of Works, concerning tlio works carried on during the month, and at present in progress. — Adopted. liiViVr. 'Hu^EN. — Application was received from Mr. W. Orowther, siskin" permission to stand his 'bus at the bottom of Shortlandcresccnt. An application was also received from Mr. J. King, asking the Board to allow his 'bus to stand in front of Mr. _ Hassan's, Shortland- street. — Mr. Atkin said they should make no distinction, so that the public is well served. — Mr. Macrefvdy said, if this was granted, proper hours of starting ought to be fixed. — Mr. George proposed that the petitions be granted ; and that they start every halfhour, and stand in front of the Post-office. — Mr. Sceabs seconded.- Mr. Staines moved, as an amendment, that the stand remain where it is. — \ir. Atkin seconded. — The original motion was carried. Notice of MoTrox. — Mr. Bugden to move next sitting day that the Secretary be instructed to write to the Inspector of Police, to a&k him if it is not possible to put a stop to cows stiaying about the stieets in Eastward No. 3. Emtly - prACE.— Letter from Mr. R. Kccsmff, calling attention to the bad state of footpath m Emily-place, opposite his residence. — Inferred to Foreman of Works, with power to act as necessary.

The wiiter added that the committoc preferred a flight of steps to facilitate access to the Institute. — Mr. George moved that a flight of steps bo erected in the place where lb was intended to place the urinal. — Bugden seconded.— Mr. Macready moved, as an amendment, that the steps be erected, but not to cost more than a guinea. — Mr. Sceats seconded.— Carried. — Mr. Sceats proposed that the urinal be erected forthwith. — Mr. Macready seconded. — Carried.

Crosmxg in* Jetimyx-street. — Letter from Andrew Fernandez, stating that he paid the " City Board man" for repairing the footpath in his premises in Jermyn-streefc, near the Railway Terminus Hotel. He stated j that the fast dray that went over the footpath made it worse than before. He hoped the repair 3 would bo done as soon as pos- ! siblc. — Mr. Staines made a statement as to thoafTair. — The Foreman of Works explained. — A rather hot discussion ensued. — Mr. Stainos moved that a committee of three, namely, Messrs. Atkin, Bugden, and Hampton, be appointed to search into the matter. — Mr George seconded — Carried. J'lDim 'io Yj:r:r>irr ov Coroner'.s Jury. — A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary's office, enclosing rider to verdict of jury as to death of John Holmes, recommending the erection of a lamp in Custom-house-stieet. A memo, way added from the Provincial Secretary, stating that the Provincial Government would contribute out of the Harbour Trusts Fund a poi tiou of the expense, leaving it to the Board to dcci le as the necessity of lighting thi3 stieet. — Mr. George moved that, as the dangerous locality named is out of the city boundary, they refor the matter back to the Provincial Government for them to erect this lamp. — Seconded and carried. Apipal - D\.Y. — Thursday next, at 12 o'clock, was fixed as an appeal-day, when appeals against the rate will be considered Maps — Mr. George moved, "That the Foreman of Works supply two maps, for the information of the Commissioners, one defining existing sewerage, the other s 1 owing the number of lamps lighted and unlighted in the city." — Mr. Atkin seconded, on the understanding that the woik be done at the I convenience of the Foreman, and not as a special work. — Mr. Staines objected : there was no necessity ; they knew where the sewer v/a s *, j>nd they could easily find out about the lamp^, — The original motion was put and carried. Sewer TN* Moore-street. — The report of the Foreman of Works as to the cost of this work was read. — Mr. Staines opposed a motion that it be adopted — Mr. George moved that it be referred to the Streets Committee, to report as to the cheapest manner in which it can bo clone. — Mr. A slier seconded. — Mr. Staines proposed as an amendment that it be not proceeded with. — The original motion was carried. Siioe-biacks. — Letter was read from certain persons, asking that some measure be introduced to regulate the city shoe-blacks, as they weie becoming a great trouble, with their quarrels for place. It suggested that a license should be fixed. — The Chairman stated that the Board could take no action in this matter. Fortnightly accounts were then considered, cheques signed, &c.
