CHPJSTOHUECH, August 18 : A meeting of unemployed was held yesterday afternoon, in Cathedral Square, to receive the progress report of the Committee. That report stated that 110 persons _ had registered as unemployed. ke«olutions, adopting report, also expressing sympathy, and appointing a deputation to wait on the Provincial Government, were passed unanimously. The funds were ample to allow of the carrying out of the line to Kaiapoi, but, probably necessary arrangements would not be made for a month. The work would be let in small contracts. Contractors could make the necessary airangements with workmen. The Government would not send for mole labour -nhilo any lur^e number of workmen were unemployed. The Governntpjit would consult with the AJayor of Chwstchnrcli as to the piovidingof temporary employment.

DUKEDIN". -August 22 : The unemployed presented -themselves in a body at the Government buildings to-day, and a deputation informed the I 'eputy-Supevintendent that they had exam mod the works offered by the GovernMieut. and found that they would not give "tucker," and refused to take it. They were unformed that Government would take no further action in the matter, when the unemployed gave three groans for the Secretary for Land and Woiks.

August 22 : A woman named Glruttcrman v/as brought up at the Resident Magistrate's Court at Pataa, on [Friday, charged with •concealment of birth; but, os the body of the child could not be found, she was .remanded till Monday. The Court sat again to-day, but no fresh evidence -was taken. Prisoner made a statement to the effect that she had confessed to having given birth to a child in the open air on the 12th instant ; that on recovering consciousness she inquired for the child, and was told by Mrs. Connelly, the midwife, that " You will have enough to do to diag through the world without that." Mrs. Connelly, who had been previously arrested and discharged, was again taken into custody. August 23 : The woman lately charged with infanticide at Patea has been committed to take her tiial at the ensuing sittings of the Supreme Court.
