THE LATE FIRE ON THE 'EXCELSIOR.'

On Saturday last, at 11 o'clock, a survey was held to ascertain the amouut of damage done on board the ship 'Excelsior.' The surveyors were— for the ship, Captain Clayton aud Captain Daldy • for the New Zealand Insurance Company, Mr. G. P. Pierce ; for the Southern Insurance Company, Mr. D. Craickshank ; and for the tPacific Insurance Company, Mr. G-. Thome. It was found that the vessel had received very little injury, the only damage being to the upper deck, which was slightly charred. Tho chief injury done was to a quantity of cargo for Napier, consisting of candles and bale goods, the damage to which it is thought will amount to about £300 or £500. The surveyors' report will be handed to us today, and an inquiry into the cause of the fire will also be held before the coroner.
