AUCKLAND INSTITUTE.

Last night, at half-past 7 o'clock, the first monthly meeting of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Institute, for the season, was held in the Civil Commissioner's office, adjoining the Museum. There was a large attendance of members. The Rev. Dr. Purchas, President of the Institute, was in the chair. — The Secretary read a list of 22 new members, together with the annual report, which showed the Institute to be in a flourishing condition. At the close of the first year its membership numbered 63 ; the number was now 130. The Secretary also read a list of the donations which had been made to the Museum by various gentlemen, embracing no fewer than 32 objects, since February, 1870. — The President delivered his anniversary address, after which some discussion ensued relative to erecting proper buildings for the Museum and a free public library.- A resolution was carried approving of the appointment of a committee of the Council to consider the utilisation of the present site for the purposes referred to. — Mr. Kirk read a paper on the botany of certain parts of the Waikato district ; and another paper was read from Captain Hutton on the sailing flight of the albatross, in which the views he expressed in a former paper on the same subject were supported by further arguments. — A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the proceedings.
