LATER SOUTHERN TELEGRAMS. SAFETY OF THE 'CHARLES EDWARD' WELLINGTON AND THE PORT OF CALL.
WESTPORT. May 9: Captain Denchrass, of the schooner 'Mary Ann Every,' which has just arrived, reports having seen a steamer under sail, apparently broken' down, ten miles S.S.W. off Eocks Point,' on Saturday afternoon, at 5 o'clock, steering northwards, believed to be the ' Charles Edward.' ' 5 p.m.: Captain Deuchrass says he is certain the steamer he saw was the 'Charles Edward/ as he was becalmed from 7 a.m to 5 p.m. close to her. She had either broken down or was short of coal, but made no signals. He distinctly saw Captain Holmes on the bridge.
DUNEDIN. May 9 : A father and son named La-wson have been drowned while crossing the Upper Taieri Birer. The Cromwell Quai*tz Company crushed'2sooz. for a week's work. The escort brought down 6,7000z.
WELLINGTON. May 12 : There was a numerous meeting of merchants and business men of this city fco consider the proposals made as to the port of call. No resolutions were 'submitted by the committee, as had been expected ; but the meeting unanimously pledged itself to support a route having Wellington as the terminus 5 and, after the appointment of a committee to co-operate with Mr. Collie in his endeavour to form a new line, the meet- ' ing separated.
