THE VOLUNTEERS.

The ordinary weekly parade of the Auckland Rifle Volunteer Battalion was held last night in the Drill Shed, outside the Albert Barracks. There was a very large muster, so large indeed, that the officers present seemed taken by surprise. Besides, there was a little squad of five new recruits. This is as it should - be, and shows that the volunteer movement ia not dead, and only requires that officers and men pull well and harmoniously together to make the movement in Auckland a complete success. The officers present were — the Inspecting Officer, Major Tisdall ; the senior officer, Captain Derroin j Lieutenants Matthews and Morrow ; Ensigns Mahon and Battley. The new recruits were placed under the instruction of Sergeant Gatland. The older members were then put through various evolutions by Lieutenant Matthews, who was afterwards relieved by the other officers present. The men showed an improved degree of precision. Yesterday evening the volunteer band held a meeting, in the drill-shed, for practice. Several pieces were played, in good time and tune. The present efficiency of the band is due to the exertions of Mr. McComish. We are sorry to hear that there is a prospect of his having to discontinue his services, on account of the low state of the funds of the battalion. We think any deficiency in the amount required for the salary — £50 per annum — might be easily made up by an effort on the part of the officers and men, aided by an appeal to the public. The Auckland Volunteer Battalion is to paiade on Monday next for drill.
