CRICKET. AUCKLAND Y. THE FLYING SQUADRON.

FLYING SQUADRON.

AUCKLAND. First Innings.

A cricket match between an eleven cricketers selected from the Plying Squadron and eleven players of Auckland was played m the Albert Barracks yesterday. There was a very good attendance of spectators During the afternoon his Excellency the fcrovernor and Lady Bowen made their appearance on the ground. The day wa» beautifully fine for the game, and at 11.30 the wickets were pitched, the Squadroa being the first to appear at the wickets, represented by Messrs. Richmond and Taylor, to the bowling of Bowen and Pocock. From the score below it will bo seen that the Auckland eleven were too much for our fiiends of the Navy, it being one of the strongest teams that we have had w the field for a long time back. Messrs. Uowen and Pocock, junior, bowled splendidly, every ball being dead on the wickets. Three wickets were taken by Bowen, and three caught off his bowling. Pocock got three wickets, and one caught off his bowling. The holding of the landsmen was also very good. Ihe highest score made on the side of the Squadron was by Protherea (nine), Taylor following with eight. The innings of the eleven closed to* 53, 37 of which were off the bat. The Auckland team aooa appeared at the wickets, represented by -Pocock, senior, and Magan. This latter gentleman was disposed of by Taylor with a splendid ball f or five-Pocock, senior, not >eing disposed of till he had added 30 to Ins name, all of which were got by good ! vSS? V l^ ♦ Jl™^'J 1 ™^' wlio followed Magan, did not trouble the scorers. Our "heavy hitter," Bowen, now put in an appearance, and, before he had been in lon* gave the naval gentlemen an ocular proof rtL ffi P °T er a drive down past the officers' meas for seven, it beins one of_ the best hits of the day His lnmnga waa a merry one, and, on retiring (being bowled by Taylor), he had run his score up to 29. Ree's also distinguished himself by making the largest acore ol the day— 6l— consisting of one hit for eight, one for six, one for five, three for four, the rest twos and ones. At 1.30 the players retired to luncheon, provided by Mr. James, of the Q.C.E., Victona-street, in his usual excellent style. After ample justice had been done to the luncheon, play was resumed. Keleher and Phillips added 15 and 14 respectively, and the rest of the eleven smaller numbers The innings cleared *°r l? 1 !- 1^ runs being off the Sat. Tha fielding of tlie OTying-ScpTartron team was excellent. Especially might we mention Lieutenant Wright, who splendidly caught rinlhps at point : it was one of the finest catches we have ever seen on that ground. His wicket-keeping and bowling was also good ; in tact he is a thoroughly good cricketer. The bowling of Taylor and Spaikes was excellent. If the gentlemen composing the team had only time to practise, thej would piove a very formidable one, and the result yesterday would not have been so very much on the one side. The Squadron again* appeared at the wickets and scored 95, of which Wright made 36 by good cricket. The only other double scorer was Baring, >vith 10. 'The Auckland eleven thus won the match in one innings, wiih 51 runs to spare. The following is the score :—: —
