MOUNT EDEN GAOL.
Weekly state of Majesty's Gaol, Mount Eden, for the week ending February 5, 1870 : — Awaiting for trial before the Supreme Court, 6 males ; sentenced to penal servitude, 35 males ; sentenced to hard labour, 57 males, 16 females ; in default of bail, 1 male, 3 females ; debtors, 11 males. Received daring the week, 10 males, 3 females ; discharged during the week, 4 males, 5 females. Total in gaol, 110 males, 19 females.
I 'A country sculptor was ordered to engrave i upon a stone, *• A virtuous woman is a crown ,to her husband ;" but, being pinched for 1:oom, it was contracted thus :' " A virtuous Tr«mau ist ss. to her hatband."
