~\Ye have Nelson papers to the 2nd. His Excellency the Governor has been instructed by her Majesty's Principal Secretary of Sbate for the Colonies to recognise provisionally the appointment of Johann F. A. Kelling, Esq., as North German Gonsul at N elson. A mail well advanced in years, named James Simpson Graham, has been committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court, on a charge of committing an indecent assault on Christina Jacobsen, aged between ten and eleven years. The anniversary of Nelson was celebrated as usual. The Colonist says, "At last official intelgence lias been received as to the result of the survey of the straight line between Mount Aithur and Mount Owen. Yesterday rumoui s were flying about, and were carefully piopagated by some who^e wish was fathci to the idea that the General Government had oidered a survey of the disputed ' land. In older to allay any such feeling, Mr. Luckie tel^giaphed to the Colonial Secretaiv. The following is the reply : — ' Wellington, Monday afternoon. — The puipoit of the leports hitherto recened of the suivey is, that the land claimed to be pui chased is included within the goldfields ; the distance cannot, at present, be exactly stated There is no truth as to the Genei al Government ordering a survey of the pm chased land. On the contiaiy, Mr. Mai chant is told not to make such a suivey — (Signed) W. Gisborne. From private information we have received, we are able to arid that 'the land claimed to Le purchased ' is fiom three and a-half to four and a-half miles within the goldfield."
