LATEST TELEGRAMS FROM OTAGO. DUNEDIN CITY ELECTIONS. Dunedin, August 3.
Thb Otago Daily Times, the leading journal of this province, was to-day issued for the first time as a single sheet of four pages, printed chiefly in small type. This alteration may in some measure be attributed to chaDges initiated by the newly appointed editor, Mr. Barlow, formerly of Sydney University, by the proDjaetary. The civic elections ffothe offices of four councillors and two auditors for the ensuing year took placa today. Mr. John Griffen was re-elected for the South Ward, and Messrs. Simpson and Wilkinson for two other wardt. The s.B. ' Tararua,' Captain Hagley, has arrived from Melbourne, bringing later news. Great political excitement rages throughout Victoria. Mr. Jamas Capel, a very hold and respeoted colonist, once in a very large way of business as a bookseller and stationer in Collins-street West, is dead. The 41b. loaf is selling in Geelong for 9J. The Sandhurst gold- buyers hare resolved to reduce the price at which they will purchase the gold in that district 3d. (?) per ounce. Mrs* WhittoD, who has been deserted by her husband, who is said to have gone to New Zealand, was brought before the Geelong magistrates, and she made a statement. Many wives are, it is laid, being deserted by their husbands, who are determined to " try their luck" at the Thamea (New Zealand) or Queensland goldfield*.
