Thk members of the above Society, and a few. wellwishers to the cause, held a meeting on the evening of Monday, June 1, in the rooms of Mr. Vauae, for the purpose of hearing a statistical total abstinence lecture from Captain J. C. Johnstone. Owing to the absence in Auckland of Mr. Duncan, chairman of the Society, Mr. Nazer took the chair. The gallant lecturer then delivered a very able and lengthy discourse, which was listened to' with great attention by all present. He concluded by moving, "That a committee, consisting of the Chairman, Mr. Duncan, Mr. MoDonald, and the mover, be. formed for the, purpose of preparing a humble petition to both Houses of Assembly praying that in any Local .Government Bill a clause be introduced placing the granting or refusing of licenses for the Bale of intoxicating drinks under the resident ratepayers, at their* annual meeting for the election of trustees, .&o.j or, if necesiary, that a bill be introduced for that purpose ; Bach control being, in the opinion of this Society, well calculated to place a wholesome check upon the present disastrous and disgraceful, intoxication, unhappily so prevalent in Dew Zealand." The petition to be signed by the Chairman on behalf of the Society. The motion was' seconded by Mr. McDonald, and carried unanimously. Mr. Nazer having^ proposed, and Mr. vause having seconded, a vote' of thanks to Captain Johnitone, for his lecture, which was carried unanimously, » general discussion took place.
