AGRICULTURAL RETURNS. — CENSUS OF 1867.
On comparing the returns of the land under crops of different kinds in the several provinces, we find that while Canterbury has 68,836 acres in cereals, and Otago €8,428, Auckland has only 8,731. Of course we are all aware of the reasons why there is such a vast difference, but we may reasonably expect that the next census will show us not so far behind the other provinces in tbe growth of those articles for which our climate is so eminently suitable. In lands sown with grasses, Auckland takes second place with 112,036 acres against Wellington's 126.751. Jn potatoes, Auckland has the greatest number of acres down, being 5,076 against 3,344 for Otago, and 2 390 for Canterbury. As regards garden and orchard, Auckland is again second, bavin? 2,498 acres against 2,800 for Canterbury. Throughout New Zealand there are but 164| acres laid down in tobacco, of which 71 are in Maryborough, 50 in Canterbury, 15 in Nelson, and 10 in Auckland province. This is a crop which we should think would certainly prove remunerative, if only the requisite care and attention were bestowed upon it. In the proportion of acres under crop to acres fenced, this province stands second, Taranaki having about 8-9ths and Auckland over 3-stta. The proportion in the other provinces is as follows : — Wellington, about £ ; Otago, 2-lltbs ; Canterbury, l-7th; Hawke's.Bay. J; Southland, 1-lOfch j Nelson, 1-llth j and Marlborough, l-16th.
