THE GOVERNOR'S VISIT TO THE STOCKADE AND LUNATIC ASYLUM.

In yesterday's issue we mentioned- that his Excellency the Governor, accompanied by his Honor the Superintendent and his Honor Mr. Judge Moore, paid * visit on the previous afternoon to the Mount Eden Stockade and Lunatic Asylum. ■ His Excellency and party first visited the Gaol, and were conducted through the various parts of the prison by Mr. Young, Acting Gaoler. The Governor remarked that he was much pleased with the arrangements so far as the limited space and accommodation would permit, and offered some suggestions with regard to uniform being provided for the warders and other matters relating to the gaol discipline. It was his Excellency's intention to have visited the Provincial Hospital, but he was obliged, in fulfilment of a previous engagement, to return at half -past three o'clock and visit the bazaar held in aid of the Destitute and Lying-in Hospital. After leaving the bazaar, the Governor and party left to visit the Lunatic Asylum. On his Excellency entering the grand ball, the inmates, who had been trained to sing, formed themselves into two rows and sang the National Anthem very effectively. They sub* seguently sang a hymn, the singing being conducted by Miss Lowry, who also accompanied on the harmonium. The Governor and party were conducted through the various departments of the establishment by Dr. Fisher, Resident Surgeon. Bis Excellency expressed himself very mnch pleased with the arrangements and the magnificent structure. He did not think there was such a superior establishment in the Australian colonies, and observed that it reflected great credit on the province of Auckland. It was the intention of Lady Sowen to accompany his Excellency on his visit to these institutions, but owing to indisposition her Ladyship was unable to carry out her wishes. For a similar reason Lady Bowen was not able to attend ' the bazaar, in the success of which she evinced a deep interest. We may here observe that on Friday evening next the Whau Minstrels are to give a concert at tbeXiunatic Asylum. His Excellency the GoverDor expressed his willingness to be nominated patron of the concert, but regretted that his visit to the Bay of Islands would prevent his attendance. His Honor the Superintendent and Algernon Lempriere, Esq., have • intimated their intention to be present.
