REGATTA COMMITTEE.
A mbbtino of the .Kegatta Committee was held at Mr. S. Cochranes rooms, Fort-street, yesterday, for the purpose of considering when the annual regatta shall be held. Captain W. 0. Daldy presided. Mr. Guilding, secretary, read the minutes of previous meeting, which were confirmed. The Chairman stated that the Secretary and himself had waited upon his Honor the Superintendent with the view of obtaining information as to what steps were to be taken for having a public holiday and aquatic display in Auckland. His Honor informed them that there would be a meeting of the Auckland Reception Committee held on Wednesday for the purpose of squaring their accounts, and likewise with the view of making a certain holiday as a day of rejoicing on the recovery of the Prince. His Honor had some communication with the Governor on the subject, and his Excellency would, he believed, lend his best endeavours to make a public holiday to do away with the disappointment felt by the people through the Duke of Edinburgh being unable to vißit this colony. It appeared, therefore, to be necessary that the Committee should wait until they heard what the Reception Committee proposed to do, in order that they might fall in with their arrangements. One thing was certain, that they were about to have a public holiday or demonstration on account of the recovery of the Prince. (Captain Casey : "A day of thanksgiving.") With regard to the Maori race, the Hon. Mr. Stafford had acceded to the request of the Reception Committee that the £150 should be devoted to that purpose. (Hear, hear.) No alteration that they were aware of had been made, and the natives were making all necessary preparations for taking part in the regatta. Captain Casey Baid it was no doubt a great disappointment to the people that the Prince was unable to visit them, but they had a good substitute in the person of the Governor, and the regatta should be carried out in all its integrity. (Hear, hear.) The Chairman s»id they should impress upon the Superintendent the necessity of having the regatta at the earlient possible date before the winter weather would set in, and that they should require at least a fortnight's notice to make the necessary preparations for making the regatta a complete success. The Reception Committee were to meet next day (Wednesday). . ' . .. Mr. WaymCotjth hoped those members or tne Regatta Committee who were also members of the Reception Committee would attend that meeting, and forward the object which the Regatta Committee had in view. If a day was definitely fixed for holding the regatta, a great deal more money might be collected. The Chairman said that at pretent all they could say was that the regatta would be held as soon as the requisite arrangements could be made. On tip motion of Mr. Yon dbb Hbtdb, seconded by Mr. J. Copland, the meeting wai adjourned until half-past seven o'clock on Friday evening next, "at the Star Hotel, when the committee will meet to consider any decision come to by the Reception Committw.
