CITY BOARD.

Tbs naval fortnightly meeting of the City Board of Commissioners was held at the Board-room, Canada Buildings, yesterday afternoon. Present; Messrs. George Webster (chairman), Bugden, Hill, Greenway, George, Finlay, Harris, Macready. The Secretary read the minutes of last meeting, which were confirmed.

STREET-CROSSING. A letter was receivedfrom Mr. Murdoch, Inspector of the Bank of .New Zealand, stating that the Bank would pay one-half the cost of making the streetcrossing opposite the bank premises. On the motion of Mr. George, seconded by Mr. Hiix, the Secretary was instructed to advertise for tenders for carrying out the work according to specification.

RENT OF PREMISES. A letter was read from Mason Brothers asking a reduction of the rent (245.) of their shop, situated at the coraer of Queen and Victoria-streets, owing to the badness of the times. On the motion of Mr. George, seconded by Mr. Hill, the Secretary was desired to write stating that the application was refused. STREET BRAINAGE. During rainy weather, his premises are flooded, and a pool of stagnant water is formed at the corner of the street, which is offensive to the neighbourhood. He states that the lamps were not lighted until half-past eleven o'clock, an hour after the proper time, and that they were kept in a dirty state. Inspector fteilly statpd that one of the lamps had been recovered that morning. On the motion of Mr. Finlay, seconded by Mr. George, the Secretary was instructed to write to the contractors and sureties, giving them twenty-four hoars to clean and repair the lamps. Mr. Fv/tlay moved that a reward of £10 ba given for the apprehension of the person or persons who stole the street lamps. Mr. Hill seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.

DRAIN IN VIOTORIA-STRKET. A letter was received from James Walker stating that the cost of extending the present drain under the road in Victoria-street, south side, filling in the road, side walls of drain to be built of stone and covered with timber, and the ground levelled up to the present level of road, would be £37. On the motion of Mr. Maoready, seconded by Mr. CrJEORGE, it was agreed that the work should be undertaken provided the proprietors of the property in the neighbourhood paid their proportion of the expense.

CIT? BATES. The amount of rates collected since last meeting amounted to £235 3*. lid., and the amount now in Bank to the credit o! the Board is £338 18s. lOd.

MONTHLY ACCOUNTS. The monthly accounts were examined,and cheques signed for payment of the respective amounts.

NOTICES OF MOTION. The following notices of motion for next meetiDg were given : — Mr. Harris to move, "That the urinals procured from Scotland be fixed to plan and specification, by tender, in the following places : — Behind the wharf toll-house, and in Custom-house-street, opposite the cab and cart stands, Queen-street, Parliament street, junction of Queen and Grey-streets." Mr. Harris to more, " That the stone-breaking machine at Mount Eden, , the property of the City Board, be offered for sale by tender, and should a reasonable offer be received the. amount realised by sale of same be devoted to procuring and laying blocks of stone in the principal streets." Mr. Keetley to move, " That the embankment in Upper Queen-street be fenced in on both sides." Mr. Hill to move, " That a deputation from this Board wait upon his Honor the Superintendent to ascertain whether his Honor can supply the Board with what metal and other material they may require for the streets of the, city; and, if so, that his Honor be requested to furnish the Board -with a schedule of prices for each. The depution to consist of the Chairman, the Treasurer, Mr. Bugden, and the mover." 2. "That a committee of the whole Board take into consideration the present City Board Act, with the rievr of amending the said Act, and that the Secretary, the Collector, the late Foreman of Works, and the Inspector of Nuisances be requested to furnish the Board with any information that may be useful to the same." 3. "That the Board resolve itself into committee to consider the present working expenses of the City Board, with a view to reducing the same at the end of the present financial year." Mr. jFinlay to move, "'That the water fountain now in store be erected at the bottom of Shortland* street." Mr. Bugdemt to move, "That printed daily registers be supplied to all the servants in the employ of the City Board." The meeting then separated.
