VISIT OF HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

THE THAMES.

SHORTHAND, April 9 (4.30 p.m.). Ottr little township was thrown into a considerable state of excitement by the arrival here of Sir George Bo wen, oar new Governor. His Excellency was accompanied by the Hon. Mr. Stafford (Colonial Secretary), Donald McLean, Esq. (Superintendent of Napier), F.Whitaker, Esq., Captain Young (A.D.C.), Dr. Hector, <fee. The par by landed at TookeyTown, and visited Hunt's and the Kuranui claims, after which his Excellency and suite, accompanied by a large I number of diggers, proceeded to the town of Short* land. Here the Governor met with a most enthusiastic reception, the place being crowded with diggers, who greeted him with loud and prolonged cheers. I may mention that Allan Baillie, Esq., Warden, who was sitting in Court at the time of his Excellency's arrival, having adjourned the Court for the purpose, proceeded to Waiotahi, and there met the Governor. The party, accompanied by Mr. Bailtie, after taking a look at the town, proceeded to the Court-home. Three cheers were there given for Sir G. Boweo, and three for Lady Bowen and family, by the large crowd which had now assembled. In a short but expressive speech, his Excellency returned thanks for the enthusiastic welcome that had been accorded to him ; after which he proceeded to the residence of Mr. Baillie to partake of luncheon. Several important cases were set down for hearing in the Warden's Courb to-day, in most of which Mclsaac and party, of Tapu Creek, were more or less interested, but the majority of them were adjourned till Wednesday next. What the Warden's reason is for putting many persons to so much ap* parently unnecessary expense is known only to himself. A large number of the claims have ba<l crushings, and, in a few cases, the yield has been truly wonderful. The Manukau has obtained over 300oz. to the ton. The monthly crushing of quartz from Tookey's Claim, at Goodall'a machine, has given 2560z. of gold. It was from this claim that the stone 371b. in weight, from which 2lb. weight of gold was retorted, was obtained ; and I have seen a great number of pieces of equal richness, though of smaller size, which were also picked up after the last floods. The Little Angel, formerly called the Ayrshire Claim, on the Moanataiari, has had cruthed at the Caledonian berdan 1501b. of quartz, and has realised 1440z. of gold. Messrs. Middleton, Creagh, and Davidson purchased this claim about three weeks ago for about £150, so that they have already received magnificent interest for their money. The Point-in- View Claim, up the Moanataiari, has 25 tons of quartz ready; this the proprietors intend to have crushed at Ellis and Scanlan's, and Eraser and Tinne's : they will thus prove the comparative exoellence of these machines. The Carpenters have about 100 -tons ready, which they also intend to have crushed at Ellis and Scanlan's. The Hope of All Nation*, on the i Moanataiari, are having 15 tons crushed, and expect about soz. per ton. Gollop's claim, on the j Collarbone, is having 5 tons crushed; and Kemp and party's, also on the K*raka creek, 18 tons. The stone from each of these claims, will yield about 4oz, or soz. to the ton. The Alburnia, near the Star of the South, on the Moanataiari, has had orushed, at the Carpenters' berdan, 461b. of burnt stone, and got 51oz. to the stone. HisiExoellency Sir George Bowen has just landed at Tookey.Town, and those who like to stand in hieh plaots are' off to greefchim. It is to.be regretted that he did not give notice of his intended visit to the'diggera; had he done so, thousands would have been -there to welcome him. < our Easter holidays commenoe^to-day and will terminate, on Tuesday morning, till which time all claimg.ajM protected., .} ,-
