COMMISSION ON PRISONS.

Messrs. James O'Neill, M.G.A., and G. E. Haughton, M.Gr. A., members of the commission appointed by the Government to inspect and Teport upon the various prisons throughout the colony, visited Mount Eden Gaol on Thursday last, and made a thorough inspection of the prison. On Friday they commenced to take evidence at their office, Provincial Government Building", when bis Honor the Superintendent and Mr. Commissioner Naughton, Visiting Justice, were examined. To-day (Monday) the Commissioners will resume their inquiries by examining some of the clergy, Dr, Philson (Provincial Surgeon), and other persons who are accustomed to visit the gaol. The whole of the evidence adduced is taken down. So soon a* the travelling Commissioners have completed their inquiries in the different parts of the colony, they will meet with the other Commissioners, Judge Johnston and Judge Richmond, submit the entire evidence, and consult together as to the shape the report may take, which report, with the minutes of evidence, will, as a matter of course, be laid before the Government.
