THE SOUTH.

The news from the South is singularly devoid of interest ; the principal topics of discussion being the expected arrival of the Duke of Edinburgh, and preparations for his suitable reception. The Ministers are finding their way buck to Wellington and work ; and we notice that the Hons. J. Hall and M»jor Richardson had already set their colleagues an e*ample in this respect. Colonel Haultam was expected to return on the 16th. The General Government are now advertising for pyrotechnists, whose skill will be required during the Prince's visit; and the Wellington Independent trusts there are local artists capable of undertaking to make a suitable display, and that we snail not have to look to outriders to execute such a work. A movement has been set on foot in Wellington to prepare an address to his Excellency before his departure, signed by the whole of the colonists of the province, expressing their grateful appreciation of nis services, and their sympathy with him under the unjust treatment to which he has been subjected by the Imperial Government for his unselfish and able defence of colonial interests. Tenders for erecting a ball-room at Government House have been received, and the lowest was found to be £1,500. The representatives for the city of Christchurch m the Canterbury Provincial Council have, by request, attended* public meeting for the purpose of ex« plaining—" 1. Their views as to the course they in* tend to adopt with regard to reducing the present expensive system upon which provincial institution* are maintained." "2. To inaugurate meani for organising a Financial Reform Association. 3, To consider the advisability of calling the Council together without delay, for the purpose of obtaining from the Superintendent and his Executive some publicity as to their policy with regard to the debentures and their disposal." Ine Press says: — "The whole tone and temper oC the meeting unmistakably confirmed the opinion* expressed at the meeting held in September last as to the abolition of the provincial »y»tem. Each speaker in turn, amid the applaus* of tne audience, affirmed the necessity of a radical change* nor was a single voice raised in support of the opposite view. Finally, two resolutions were unanimously carried, one for the establishment of a financial Reform Association, the other calling on tne Government to summon fche Provincial Council at the earliest date possible."
