EDUCATION. To the Editor of the Daily Southern Cross.

Sib, — During the past few months, considerable diionssion has taken place, through the medium of the public journals, on the advantages of education, and on the best means of advancing the same ; and although some of the disputants seemed to throw cold water on the efforts made in this province to educate our youth, yet there are doubtless many who would rejoice to see a thoroughly practical scheme of education receive the sanction and support of the provincial authorities. I am happy to announce that our respected teacher, Mr. Wotthington, has to-day received * most gratifying proof that his work is appro* ciated, even by those to whom he is personally unknown, aa the following letter will most amply prove : — -^-"■"'^ " Sir, — Although personally^ stranger to you, may I take the freedom of mentioning how gratifying it was to read in the newspapers of the intellectual oom. petition among your pupils, on the occasion of the prizes for reciting, &c? Surely these lads are making a good start in the improvement of spare hours, and I for one would say, Go on ! Go on ! Let them now only be very cautious on three points, viz., their companions — that they shall be only good ones ; 2nd, their recreations — pure and uninjurious ; 3rd; the Sabbath-day— respected and well spent. Feeling some love for and interest in youth, I beg your acacceptance of the few books and papers enclosed, asking your permission if they may be used at your Academy in spare hours by the boys. Also, with yonr consent, sir, 1 enclose a recitation book >and two prizes for two pieces in the same, to the lads who shall give them most creditably, the preference being given to lads who may belong to a Band of Hope, or who have long thought of doing so. The period for these prizes you will determine— early, if agreeable, will please j and obliga by not publishing my name. — Yours, &0., , "To Mr. Worthington, Waiuku School." Such a letter as this needs no comment. I will only mention that it is probable that Friday, 27th Sep» tember, will be the day selected for the award of these prizes. — I am, &o.
