TO THE PUBLIC OF AUCKLAND, EIO., ETC. THE Committee of the Military Settlers resident at Cambriddge, appointed for the purpose of recovering Back Pay, &c, owiDg to them by the New Zealand Government, would respectfully, but urgently, appeal to the sympathies of the Auckland public to come forward and assist them with that pecuniary aid which is so essential in pursuing what threatens to become a lengthened lawsuit ; we, the Military Settlers, to whom Back Pay is owing, being determined to leave nothing undone to make the New Zealand Government amenable for their engagements, &c The Committee, in thus appealing to the public, feel themselves called on to admit that the present is an unusual course of procedure; »>ut it simply arrses from the ext>aorilinary course adopted l>y the Government, in refusing to let our case be brought before the Supreme Court of the colony in the usual way, but have decided on putting us to the tedious and expensive procedure of a Petition of Right to «he Queen. We have, therefore, no alternative but to obtain that Right ; and so force the Government out of their hiding-place, and place them before a jury of our countrymen, there to have the matter brought to a final issue. The Committee, in thus bringing their case before the public, would respectfully pi-int out the advantages to be derived by the province at large from the recovery of the Back Pay ; and, therefore, nncerely trust that our appeal will not be made in vain. N.B.— T. B. Gillies, Esq., the gentleman whose services we h .ye retained in the matter, is very concl«xsive on the subject of our ultimate success Subscript.'^" win tie thankfully received and aokuowleiiged at the office of the Daily Southsiut Cross. (Signed) ALLAN NOBLF. M AGUI RE, Chaiiman pro tern. L. WILLIAM LOVEDAY, Secretary. Cambridge, vSeptember 27, 1866.
