AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND CLIMATOLOGY.
It will be recollected by our readers that Captain J. A. Wilson, of the Tamaki, several months ago, published in our columns a series of letters, entitled " Remarks on Australian and New Zealand Climatology, relative to our droughts, rains, and hot winds." These letters were sent home by Captain Wilson, and have been very favourably received by scientific men of the highest eminence. Amongst these we may mention Mr. Glaisher, and the Superintendent of the French Meteorological Department in Algeria, which is, perhaps, the most complete and extensive in the world, consisting of about 150 separate stations. Of the letters sent to Sir Roderick Murchison, one miscarried ; but the following letter, which Captain Wilson received last mail from that highly eminent man, shows with what interest he regards the meteorological and geographical bearing of these letters :—: —
" Koyal Geographical Society, "January 5, 1866. "Sir,— l beg to thank you for your communication of the sth October, and for the letters you sent to me on the meteorology of New Zealand. "Although your theory is very ingenious, and may prove quite true, I cannot, as matters now stands, submit your letters to the Council of the Royal Geographical Society, as number 4of them is wanting. "Your communication seems to be well suited for the Meteorological Society also.— l have, &c, "RODEKICK MUBCHISON." We may add that the series will be continued, but we are aware that Captain "Wilson is about entering into engagements that will prevent him giving his attention to scientific pursuits for several months. It is a matter for oongratulation.thatNew Zealand colonists are taking their places amongst the leading scientific men of the old world.
