In the new Victorian Parliament the disposition of party is as follows :— Ministerial, 58; Opposition, 20. The election* in and around Melbourne have

been in favour of Ministerial candidates. A little excitement was displayed at some of the polling booths, but no breach of the peace occurred. Referring to the elections the Age says :— "The result of the final batch of elections is most encouraging, and though a defeat has been experienced in quarters least expected, it h»8 been amply compensated by the return of candidates in the country districts. The result of the Melbourne elections, if of any significance, will serve to illustrate the results of that system of centralisation which has hitherto operated so prejudicially to the interest of country constituents, and which is more or less powerful in proportion to the number of its representatives in Parliament. The issue of the East Melbourne election has surprised all parties; and it will, no doubt, for a few days to come, form a topic of consideration, and the influence* that have brought about such * result will be determined from the particular point of view that the inquiry is ir^ stituted. Tne defeat of Messrs. Michie and Cre* «r, at St. Kilda, and Mr. Kyte at East Melbourne, has been equalised, numerically speaking, by t\e" Return of Ministerial candidates at Sandhurst and Castlemaine." A violent boiler explosion took place on the morning of January 27th, at the Band of Hope Company's mine. One man, a carpenter, named Robert Dodd, was not expected to recover.
