SYDNEY.

The following is from the Empire of January 20 (summary edition): — The immediate effect of the ad valorem duties upon our market has been an advance fully equal to tho impost upon most articles of general comump-

tion for of course the fortunate holders of stocks know better than to sell under the increased cost of importation, knowing that, if they part with their goods at former rates, they cannot replace them unless at «n advance of five per cent. , In our market for imported goods we have to report a8 follows :- r Brandy.— This article continues very dull. Present quotations do not exceed 6s. Bd. per gallon for Martell's, in hogsheads, though small sales in quarter-casks are reported by auction at 6s. lOd. to 7s. per gallon. Hennessy's battle-axe brand recently sold by auction at 27a. to 275. 6d. per case. JRttm continues without any material change. The present value Preston's 30 per cent, overproof is about 3s. 3d. per gallon. Geneva is in better request, and is now quoted at ! 10s. 6d. per case for best brands ; Urge contents are now more inquired for, and obtains better commensurate prices. In other spirits we have nothing of any importance to report. Wines. — There has been a fair amount of business done by auction. Messrs. Dean and Co., and Threlkeld and Co., have both held important sales, which have been attended with better results than we have had to record for BOine time past. The demand has been, however, chiefly for fine ports and shetries, which have realised full market prices. Malt Liquors. — There has been an improvement in draught ale this month, though perhaps not more than the increased cost under the new duty. Martian's ale is now quoted at £7 10s. to £7 123. 6i1., and other brands of Burton brew at £6 10s. to £7 ; draught porter, £6 15s. to £6 17s. 6d. for Taylors, and £6 10s. to £6 12s. 6d. for other fine brands ; bottled ale is dull of sale at 9s. 6d. to 10s. per dozen for beat brands j bottled porter is in good demand, and commands 10s. 3d. for good brands ; Blood's stout is saleable at 10*. 6d. per dozen. Coffee. — An important sale of Manila is reported, price withheld; but probably about 84d. per lb. Ceylon plantation is quoted 12£ d. per lb. in bond, with little demand. Salt. — Prices are a shade lower. Coarse Liverpool in strong striked sacks is quoted at £3 7s. 6d. to £3 10s. Rock, about £4 10s. on the spot, and £3 155. to arrive. Uxob. — A. considerable advance has taken place in this article, and £27 per ton is now the general quotation for the best Patna. At this price trade parcels have been recently sold. Candles. — The market is very firm, but we are unable to quote any further advance iv price. Pull weights of best brands, however, continue saleable at 13d. per lb. Breadstuffs. — The market is very bare of Adelaide flour, and the Sydney agents will sell only small parcels to their regular customers, for which they obtain from £25 to £26 per ton, according to quality. Chilian flour is more plentiful, and does not command a commensurate price. There have lately been sales by auction of two or three Chilian cargoes, which have realised £20 to £21 10s. for parcels of 20 tons and 5 tons respectively ; and the bulk of each cargo in one line at £19 6s. to £19 10a. per ton. Adelaide wheat is quoted at 9s. 6d. to 9s. 9d. ; Californian, Bs. 9d. ; and Chilian, Bs. 6d. per bushel. Sugars. —The market has been very firm throughout the month, with a decided upward tendency. The latest public sale of importance was that of the cargo of Mauritius samples, ex 'Fairy Rock,' by Messrs. L. B. Threlkeld »nd Co., on which occasion the entire cargo was disposed of at the following prices :— White crystals, £43 7s. 6d. j white counters, £42 to £42 7a. 6d. ; fine straw counters, £39 to £39 7s. 6d. ; fine yelW counters, £37 15s. to £38 15s. ; good yellows, £34 ss. to £36 55. ; bright rations, £32 7s. 6d. to £33 7s. 6d. ; ordinary rations, £30 10s. to £31 155. ; and low qualities, £28 to £29 12s. 6d. per ion. \ Tjcas. — The market during the month has been comparatively dull, and former prices have not in many cases been maintained. The fact appears to be that the trade last month, expecting an increased ' duty on importations, bought in anticipation of their future requirements, and consequently are now fully stocked. Several important sales by auction have been attempted this month, but sales have been effected on only a limited scale at a slight reduction on the whole on last month's closing prices. Tobacco and Cigars. — This market is without any material change. Really good Southern American twist is held for 2s. 3d. to 2s. 6d. per lb , but the bulk of the stock ou hand is of very inferior quality. Colonial-manufactured, from imported leaf, contiuues at 4s. 3d. to 4s. 9d. duty paid ; Southern tens, 15d. to 16d. per lb , in bond. 6d. per lb. for prime samples. Eleme raisins, also scarce, and saleable at 7£d. to Sd. per lb. Oilmen's Stoees. — Pickles and oils continue scarce and in good demand. Well- assorted invoices of oilmen's stores still command remunerative prices. Provisions. — Hams are scaree — sales at 19d. per lb. ; bacon, at 14d. to 141 d. ; and prime North Wilts cheese at 18d. per lb. Bags and Woolpaoks. — Speculation in threebushel basjs has caused an advance in value in all the Austral isian colonies ; 16s. per dozen is our, pieseut market quotation, but some holders look for a higher figure, and refuse to sell under 17s per dozen. Woolpacks are quoted about 3d. each higher, but there if not much demand at the present time of the year.
