Yesteiday morning, at an eaily honr, a barque was signalled, which proved to be the Eclipse, from Ahuriri, 4J days out. It will be remembered that she unfortunately grounded a few weeks back on the eastern spit, whilst endeavouring to leavo that harbour in tow of the Wonga Wonga. She comes here to repair ; but the amount of damago done is as yet unceitain, 110 thorough overhaul having been as yet possible. The Eclipse is an Aberdeen vessel of 254 tons register, and has been for Borne time on the berth between Sydney and Wellington. She is lying on the hard off Wynyard pier. Simultaneously almost with the Eclipse's number the signal for a sohooner was made, and the Comet was Boon off the town wharf. She hails from Otago, which place she left on Monday tho 2nd. She is bound for Sydney ; but on account of heavy gales from the N.W. on the 7ih and Bth hist, she was unable to pass through tho Straits. Captain Cork, in consequence, bore up and came into Auckland en passant. The Comet has only a small cargo, principally oats and grass seed. Wo believe that she will proceed almost immediately to her deitination. Captain Cork reports that the Gil Bias was to leave Port Chalmers on the day subsequent to his own departure. The Gil Bias had brought over from Melbourne about 80 emigrants ; but Otago seems to be hardly to their taste, for we are informed that a great I majority of the number are about to return in the Pirate.

Great dissatisfaction, we might say disgust, is uni versolly felt here at the mockery of postal communication with which we are treated by the Ooleman steamers, for which New Zealand pays so dearly. Under the present unfair arrangement, Otago, as the southern terminus of the route, must always be the sufferer from any delay through the whole line, as the lost time must be made up in order to catch the return steamer at Sydney. The return mail, therefore, is generally closed here before one-half of the people receive their letters. Surely, as this province has but one call from the steamer, while all the others have two, it would be but fair that her stay here ihould be prolonged as much as possible ; but, instead of this, we havo but three days, should the steamer arrive at her time (which almost never happens), while at Nelson she stays two days upon arrival from Sydney, and, after a fortnight's interval, occupied in going the rpund of the other provinces, remains three days more before being despatched for Sydney. This, we presume, is for the purpose of i providing Nelson, out of the general revenue, with the same commercial facilities for which we pay the 'Pirate' j i 64000 per annum. If the general contract is to be upheld, Otago and Canterbury have a right to demand a direct line to Melbourne; but it would be far better to knock the present scheme on the head altogether. — Otago Colonist, March 80. The s.s. Pirate returned from Melbourne on Wednesday last, and has this time brought our home letters, with a. full complement of passengers, Bheep, horses, and cargo. She left Hobion's Bay on the 18th inst., and made the coast about Dusky Bay on the 25th ; a heavy gale, however, which sprang up, prevented her from making Foveaux Straits before Tuesday morning. Captain Robertson states this gale to have partaken of the oharaoter of a cyclone, and to have been the worst ho ever witnessed in this trade. .The noble vessel weathered the liorm with comparative safety, but when the wind lulled and the water was rising in dense walls higher than the masts, a heavy set, struck her, carrying away bulwarks, two boats, sheep pens, and staving in the front of the poop. She will be temporarily, rcpoired hero, and leaves again for the Bluff and Melbburne on Saturday fint.— Otugo Witness, Maroh 80th. ~
