BOROUGH COUNCIL AT UPPER HUTT

Inefficiency Alleged

Allegations of inefficiency were made against the Upper Hutt Borough Council by Messrs. R. A. Row and J. A. Taylor, who resigned from the council last month', at a publie meeting in Upper Ilutt on Wednesday night. The meeting was convened by the Upper Hutt Borough Ratepayers’ Association to permit ratepayers to discuss civil administration and to enable the ex-councillors to explain the developments culminating in their action.

At the outset it apiieared that the new council was a good working team, said Mr. Taylor. Dissension became openly apparent after the election of the works committee. "After that decisions were made by Hie council time and time again, and were revoked at the next meeting,” said Air. Taylor. “On two occasions I have had to threaten writs of mandamus-against the council to have the standing orders carried out,” said Mr. Row, supporting Mr. Taylor’s remarks. “The councils during my time have all worked for the good, of the district as a whole,” said the mayor, Air. Blewman. “We’re not infallible, we make mistakes just like everyone else, and we have been experiencing a difficult period brought about by the war. Now the war is over we are looking for the support of the people.” The meeting passed the following resolution :—“That this meeting of residents of the Upper Hutt Borough regrets the necessity for the resignation of Alessrs. Row and Taylor, and fully supports the principles which were responsible for their action, placing on record appreciation for their sincere service during their term of office.”
