SAIGON FIGHTING
Annamese Counter-Attack Repulsed
SAIGON, October 25. Gurkhas occupied Thuduc, eight miles north-east of Saigon, and then pushed on 10 miles. They encountered fierce opposition, and repulsed an Annamese coun-ter-attack at night. Japanese troops are reported to be sweeping over the area south of Cholon.
Japanese who have been captured disguised as Annamese have been handed over to their own army for execution while Annamese are being tried by summary court-martial which is constantly in session.
British security squads have been rounding up the staff of the Japanese Consulate, who have been living unmolested in Saigon. Members of the staff of the German Consulate will also be taken into custody.
French tanks are coming up in support as they near the Annamite nationalist headquarters, and one report says they have already occupied the town. Full French administration has been restored in all areas of Indo-China south of the Chinese-occupied zone. An Indo-China communique reports acts of terrorism in Saigon and incendiary attacks on buildings. Indian troops continued their operations north of Saigon, occupying two areas without opposition. A steel factory and other buildings in these areas were set on fire yesterday. Annamese started seven fires during the night.
