Pleading guilty to a number of charges of theft. Wilfred Churchill, ship’s carpenter. 37. was committed to the Supremo Court for .sentence by 'Mr. Herd. S.M.. in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday. The charges were of stealing on May’ 27. 1944. at Wellington. .some crockery and underwear material valued at £3/12/6, the property of the Port Shipping Line, and stealing 20 holts of dress material and one sewing machine to the total value of £l5l/17/4, also the property of the Port Line,
According to police evidence, Churchill had taken the sewing machine and Hie dress material from the hold of a ship en route from England to N“w Zealand. H<* was employed in the ship as a carpenter, and had stated that ho received the crockerv and underwear from another man on board. Accused said he knew that the goods had been stolen. Mr. G. C. Kent appeared for accused and Detective-Sergos nt Cflllagan prosecuted.
