WRAPPING OF BREAD

Statement By Minister “There is no more reason why the public should have to bring wrapping for their bread than that they should have to bring bags for their sugar or any other loose commodity,” said the Minister of Health, Mr. Nordmeyer, yesterday. “Till the paper shortage became acute, bread was wrapped for the customer. It was only because of the paper shortage that this practice was stopped. Now that paper supplies are more satisfactory, the public are entitled to a reversion to the former practice. No specious argument about the expense of so doing will alter the fact that bread unwrapped is subjected to unnecessary risk of eontaminatiou. “If the statement issued by the Otago Master Grocers’ Association is an indication of the grocers’ attitude generally, and they will not voluntarily agree to resume the (ormer practice of wrapping bread, it may be necessary fo require them to do so. The public must be protected.”
