PUNTER’S PARADISE
Big Betting Business In Britain (Received October 19, 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 19. More than £70,000,000 has so far been invested during the year on horses and dogs, states the “Daily Express.” It is a record sum, of which more than £20,000,000 has been invested at big horse meetings. People who before the war did little betting have won and lost four-figure fortunes. Bookmakers say race meetings this year have been a punter’s paradise. Totalizator' betting this year on greyhounds has already exceeded £40,000.000. Returns in 1943 for 76 tracks were £53,000,000. Bookmakers say the increased betting is due to the larger sums which people are earning, and also to the punters’ hopes of earning tax-free money.
